The nights are getting darker, which means opportunistic crime is on the rise especially in residential areas throughout the UK but don’t worry – we’ve compiled a list of things you can do to maximise the security of your home. On the 1st October 2014, Charlotte Neal of the Hampshire Chronicle reported that two villages near Winchester were targeted by, “an organised gang” who struck 14 times in just four hours. The article only goes to highlight the importance of home security during Winter and why you should look into securing your home. Home Security Month reports that, “60% of burglaries fail on homes with alarms – yet 71% of us don’t have one”. Source: Home Security Month How can you protect your home this Winter? Security Lighting The first thing you can do is install automated security lighting in your home. Our professionally installed security lighting can permanently light up a specific area and can be linked up to movement sensors to light up an area if movement is detected. This acts as a strong deterrent for opportunist thieves. Timed Lighting/Appliances This is by far the cheapest option to increase home security during winter. You can purchase Electronic Timers that plugin into the wall and will turn on the device that’s plugged in at a specified time. If you’re going out for the evening or know the house will be unoccupied for a period of time then you can set the TV and lights throughout the house to come on at a set time to make the house seem like its occupied. This is a big deterrent for opportunistic burglars and will increase the protection of your home without breaking the bank. Home Alarm System Its always best to have a home alarm system installed to protect your home and we would always recommend this to our customers. We install two wireless home alarms – the Wisdom Wireless Alarm and the Risco Agility 3 Wireless Alarm. Both of these are great security systems but we would recommend the Agility 3 because of the additional security features it has over the Wisdom Alarm. With the Agility 3 there are cameras fitted to the Infra-Red detectors and when movement is detected (when the alarm is set) the detectors will record video footage and store this on the Risco Cloud server so you have evidence of the break-in. For additional protection we recommend having your alarm linked to a Guarding company as this will alert them of to any potential break-ins. The guarding company will respond to the incident and call the police in your absence for added peace of mind. Visible CCTV System Having a CCTV system installed around the outside of your property can be an effective way or deterring opportunistic burglaries. The more visual deterrents you have the less likely you are to be burgled. We install a range of CCTV systems for home owners and businesses that allow you to record and remotely view the CCTV Cameras using your PC, Tablet or Smartphone. Lock up your Windows and Doors One of the simplest things you can do is make sure all windows and doors are locked and make sure your locks that are Anti-Bump, Anti-Snap, Anti-Pick and Anti-Drill for maximum protection. If you have a Conservatory or French Doors we would highly recommend using a Patlock French Door & Conservatory Lock. This prevents intruders using a Lock Snapping attack on your French Doors; not only is it a visual deterrent but it adds significant protection to the rear of the property. Invest in a secure Roller Garage Door The SeceuroGlide Excel from SWS is the first roller door on the market that’s both Police and Insurance Approved. Burglars will sometimes try to break-in to the garage first and then attempt to break into your home. Once the burglar has gained access to the garage they are hidden from public view and can easily gain access to your premises through the (less secure) adjoining door.
