About Ash
Ash is a popular commuter village due to its convenient transport links with London, Guildford and Reading and its semi-rural location. The picturesque Basingstoke Canal weaves its way through the village towards Mytchett Lake. Nearby is Ash Common, a protected area of heathland home to three endangered bird species (Woodlarks, Nightjars and Dartford Warblers).
Ash Common also encompasses Ash Ranges, a popular spot for cycling and walking. However, caution is advised – it is also used as a training ground for the British Army, with troops firing live rounds on occasion! Until the mid-19th Century Ash was a farming community, and this is evidenced today in a number of historic farmhouses which are now pubs and residential properties.
