Top tips to protect your home from intruders
Burglars are always on the look out for potential (and easy) targets so to prevent your home being one of them we’ve decided to put together a short list of tips to help protect your home from intruders. Obviously we would recommend installing a wireless home alarm system (certainly around the areas of Hampshire where crime rates are high), but you don’t need to build Fort Knox to avoid a break in.

1. Keep it out of sight
This may seem like an obvious start, but having expensive possessions in plain sight of passers by isn’t a overly smart move. Always make sure bikes are stored in a secure garage (if you have one) or inside the house, failing that round the back of the house or anywhere out of sight.
Keep big screen TV’s out of sight to passers by as its a dead give-away that not only do you have an expensive TV but you may have other expensive items in your home increasing the potential ‘reward’ for an intruder if they’re thinking of breaking into your home. You could consider rearranging rooms that are visible from the roadside or public paths – keep valuable items out of sight and make sure you don’t make it easy for potential intruders. If you cannot rearrange your living space it is advisable that you draw the curtains so passers by can’t look into your home.
If you do have an alarm system or even a dummy bell box, make sure it is clearly visible. These are great theft deterrents and any potential intruder would think twice before attempting a break in.
2. Fool the intruder
When your out of the house a good technique to preventing possible break-ins is to leave a light on to show you could be home – and most intruders will often walk away if there’s any risk of being caught. Electricity bills are forever on the increase and we definitely wouldn’t want to promote wasting energy so try using low energy and cost effective bulbs to help keep the costs down. If you’re busy and are likely to forget to use this tip you can plug a free-standing lamp into a timer so the lamp comes on automatically at the same time for the same effect.
3. Using a spare key
People would often put a spare key under a rock or under a flower pot if they wanted an easy way to get access in the house if they lost or forgot their keys. Instead of doing this you could consider giving your key to a trusted neighbour as this its safer than keeping it hidden outside.
